Scooter Maintenance Guide: Service Intervals, Engine Oil and Daily Care

11 July 2026 · 6 min read · by the Skooty team

Scooters are simple machines, and simple habits keep them healthy for years. This guide covers the schedule and the small checks that matter. One rule above all: your owner's manual beats any blog, including this one, because exact figures differ between models.

Service schedule

Most Indian scooter makers schedule the first services close together and then space them out. Honda's typical pattern for the Activa, for example, is a first service around 500 to 750 km or the first month, a second around 3,000 km or 90 days, and a third around 6,000 km or 180 days. After the first year, roughly every 6 months or 6,000 km is a common rhythm.

If you ride little, service by time, not just distance. Oil degrades even when the scooter is parked.

Engine oil

Most modern Indian scooters use a 10W-30 grade engine oil; scooter engines with automatic (CVT) transmissions typically need a JASO MB rated oil rather than the MA oil used in motorcycles with wet clutches. An Activa takes under a litre per change. With regular mineral oil, changing every 3,000 to 5,000 km is a safe habit in Indian conditions, and at least once a year regardless of distance. Many scooters also have a small quantity of gear oil that your mechanic should check or replace on alternate services.

Between services, check these

  • Tyre pressure every two weeks. Typical scooter figures are around 22 to 24 psi front and 28 to 32 psi rear, a little higher with a pillion. The exact numbers are printed in your manual and often on a sticker on the scooter itself.
  • Air filter: a clogged filter directly hurts mileage and pickup. Get it cleaned at every service and replaced when the mechanic recommends.
  • Battery: keep the terminals clean, and ride the scooter at least once a week. Batteries die fastest from sitting unused.
  • Brakes: if a lever starts feeling spongy or travels further than before, get it checked immediately, not at the next service.
  • Keep it covered: parking under a cover, or at least in shade, protects paint, plastics, seat foam and the battery.

Why this matters when buying used

A used scooter that followed this routine feels visibly different: smooth idle, clean filter, firm brakes. That's what our 17-point inspection checks for, and it's why every Skooty listing shows the scorecard instead of asking you to take our word for it.
